| Background:
We have been conducting tours to the fossil sites in the Sterkfontein
Valley since 1997. We work intimately with the palaeo-anthropologists
running these sites, and each tour conducted gives a percentage
to research. Our guides are comprised of palaeo-anthropologists actively
involved in the field. All our tours can be fully-tailored to the
requirements of each group, whether it be an individual or a large
conference group. Please e-mail us for our costs or any questions
you might have.
Palaeo-Tours
has conducted tours for a number of safari companies/travel agents
as well as government institutions. These include Passage
to Africa, Wilderness Safaris, Abercrombie and Kent, Welcome
Tours, Rennies Travel, SATOUR, Gauteng Tourism Authority and DACEL.
We have been featured in Getaway Magazine and been filmed by E!
- Wild ON as well as Star TV. Palaeo-Tours also appears in a number
of guidebooks to southern Africa such as The Rough Guide
and Frommers.
Directors:
Dr. Colin Menter and Marianne Robertson
Colin
Menter: He obtained a BA in Anthropology at the University
of Arizona, and a PhD in Palaeo-anthropology at the University
of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He has worked extensively
in southern Africa at field excavations, including the famous
fossil sites such as Makapansgat, Taung, Kromdraai and Gladysvale.
Currently he is the Deputy Director at Drimolen, which is one
of the newest and most remarkable hominid sites being excavated
in Africa. Due to his comprehensive experience at excavations
in South Africa, he is uniquely qualified to conduct tours to
the famous fossil sites such as Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Drimolen
and Kromdraai. Colin has been conducting tours since 1997 to not
only support his research, but also to provide funding for further
investigations into other cave sites in South Africa. As he has
been working in the field of Palaeo-anthropology for several years,
he is intimately familiar with the fossils and fossil sites of
South Africa and as such is able to provide a unique insight into
the famous fossil sites of the Sterkfontein Valley World Heritage
Sites. He has also been involved as an expert guide to train local
guides in Palaeo-anthropology.
Marianne Robertson: Marianne obtained her BA from the University
of South Africa (Unisa) in 1989. Although majoring in English
and Art History, she also completed courses in S.A. Archaeology
and Anthropology. She is a registered SATOUR regional tourist
guide and as such may provide information to visitors about the
Gauteng region of South Africa. She recently developed and taught
a guiding course for the College of Tourism Training (CTT). This
course was designed specifically for disadvantaged South Africans,
14 of whom qualified as tourist guides. For the past 8 years,
she has been an independent aviation facilitator, organising air
charters for incoming tour and business groups into Africa and
the Indian Ocean islands. To obtain more details of her aviation
